EYJAFJÖRÐUR BEACH CLEAN UPS 2024 🌊

Every day, tons of debris wash ashore coastal areas around the world and it’s a simple way for communities to contribute to the ocean welfare. This year, we are taking another step into our environmental efforts by partnering with Ocean Missions | Mission Blue | Akureyri Municipality | Elding Whale Watching | Whale safari & Elding Research

We invite everyone to join us on weekly beach cleanups in Eyjafjordur. The concept of cleaning local beaches for environmental benefit and research data collection in north of Iceland has been pioneered by the Ocean Missions NGO (Húsavík). By combining our efforts, with joined forces we believe we can make a real difference and we want to enlarge this initiative further in Eyjafjordur.

Starting of 9th of June 2024, with the support of local organizations & companies we would like to organize regular beach cleanups in our area every Sunday in the upcoming weeks: 9.06 | 16.06 | 23.06 | 30.06 | 7.07

Together, we can make a significant impact on our coastal environment.

CLEANED BEACH: Svalbardseyri

This time we went to Svalbardseyri - a small village right across the fjord from Akureyri. It was an interesting location for us earlier this year we have found there a carcass of a Humpback whale and indeed we found some parts of the body during the scan. Once more we were in fantastic numbers so we cleaned the area with the speed of light. June ends for us with a huge smile, we´ve met so many great people and so much has been done - thank you & hopefully see you next week!

CLEANED BEACH: Grenivik

This time we drove to Grenivik - a small town, across the fjord from Akureyri about 20-25min drive. We were so fast to clean the area that we decided to approach another beach near by. The samples were taken and again we celebrated by having some snacks and chats afterwards

Once more, Great big thank you to everyone who joined the cleanup!

CLEANED BEACH: Hjalteyri

This time we drove to Hjalteyri - a small town, north of Akureyri about 20-25min drive. As we were to cover a much bigger area we divided into two groups and headed opposite ways. Once more, it took us no time to clean the area with this efficiency of a team work. The samples were taken from the southern part of the beach and will be sorted and analyzed. After successful mission we celebrated by having some snacks and chats in the hot tub by the beach!

Again, Great big thank you to everyone who joined us!

CLEANED BEACH: Coastal area of Akureyri town

23 amazing people came to join us on the first beach clean up. The area of 100 meters was marked to collect the waste separately and secure as reference sample - part of the beach clean up is the collection of research data - the disposable waste will be measured and analyzed to create a research report.

Big thank you to everyone who joined us on the first beach clean up!
