Naturalist opportunities are available at our company Whale Watching Akureyri in the north of Iceland. A great opportunity to see some amazing things, work with a fantastic team and gain further skills, training and experience on your marine biology skills, presentation, customer service and species identification skills. Positions are available from May/June-August with a possibility of extension.
Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for the position of a Guide / Crew member at Whale Watching Akureyri for the summer season 2025. The Guide will be responsible for welcoming guests, providing information about Icelandic marine wildlife, nature and the local area, assisting with safety briefings, operating audio equipment, leading tours. The Guide or a crew member will be responsible for ensuring guest safety and comfort while on tour, providing excellent customer service as well as leaving the workplace clean and refilling supplies on board the boats. Guides and crew members work in a rotation system, with 2-3 tours per day, everyone will guide and work on board as a deckhand.

STCW95/10 A-VI/1 (Basic Safety Training)
STCW95/10 A-V/2 (Crowd and Crisis Management)
Both must be completed before starting the job
Qualities we are looking for:
A strong interest and knowledge in marine science; specifically cetaceans and birds.
Good spotting skills.
Sailing experience and rope skills are desirable.
Not easily susceptible to seasickness.
A good knowledge of conservation issues related to marine life.
Confidence to narrate and interact with others.
Must be a quick learner, adaptive, hard working, outgoing, team player and generally a very positive person.
Be able to work calmly and politely under pressure and sometimes in stressful situations.
Photography skills are highly desirable.
Willingness to work long hours outdoors in unfavorable weather.
Very good English skills, other languages that are highly desirable but not necessary for all guides: German, Italian, Spanish, French.
