First tour of the season was taken over by a Minke Whale, Harbour porpoises and Northern Gannets. What a great beginning for the summer! We sailed out from Akureyri in a great weather and it took us not more than 20 minutes to find very playful harbour porpoises. These small cetaceans can easily change directions and disappear quickly so we didn’t stay long with them. Just a little further north our captain spotted a Minke whale. The whale was active and feeding and we waited for him 3 times until decided to go further north and check if we can find something more. The whole fjord is filled with bird-life and we’ve seen a significant amount of Northern Gannets! the biggest diving bird species we have in Iceland and quite rare to see here. We passed on the way the biggest sailing boat in the world that is now docked close to Hrisey but we haven’t found more whales. We tried to look for the Minke whale again but the wind picked up and it was much harder to spot animals on the way back. Hopefully we’ll find him next time!
