What a surprise we had this morning as we headed out, just as we were leaving the harbour a huge pod of dolphins popped up and these weren´t just any type of dolphins, these were Bottlenose Dolphins which have NEVER been seen before here in Akureyri! The pod totaling about 50 were moving around really quite fast often changing their direction. The pod had rather a lot of calves with them and were coming up very frequently. After watching these amazing animals for sometime and scratching our heads in bafflement as to why they are here we headed further out of the fjord. Bottlenose dolphins are rarely seen in Icelandic waters as the waters here are usually too cold for them. They have only been seen a handful of times here since 1979, when cetaceans were first starting to be recorded in Iceland. Later on we found our fabulous friend “Jubilee” the humpback whale. Who delighted us further with some wonderful surfacing’s. Our afternoon tour again found the joyful “Jubilee” humpback whale but unfortunately the dolphins were last seen leaving the fjord at top speed. There’s never a dull day here in Eyjafjörður!
