Despite the snowy weather today, the sea was very calm with hardly any waves in the overcast fjord. This gave us perfect conditions for whale watching.
We sailed out this morning towards Hjalteyri, where we had our sighting of the day: one Humpback Whale. This Humpback suddenly surfaced close to us! Even though the deep dives were a little longer at the higher end of our average, the close encounters we had were definitely worth the wait!
Each surfacing of the Humpback Whale was exciting and we got a chance to observe the whale's impressive fluke with the beautiful mostly white fluke pattern, which confirmed that we were once again seeing Piccolo!
We were lucky watching this Humpback Whale in its natural habitat while being surrounded by the wintery landscape of Eyjafjörður. The snow-covered mountains in the distance and the quiet of the fjord created a special atmosphere and on our way back the snowfall got heavier.
Overall, today’s tour was a great success. We saw one Humpback Whale, which repeatedly resurfaced in our area, slowly heading north throughout our tour.
