A Magical Encounter with Piccolo
Our whale-watching adventure in Akureyri couldn’t have had better weather – clear skies, a gentle sun reflecting off the calm fjord waters, and the surrounding mountains glowing with a warm orange hue. It was a peaceful, stunning day on the water.
We started by heading to Pullerinn, where whale had been spotted the day before. Although we didn’t see any blows, we enjoyed the serene beauty of the fjord and decided to head north. Along the way, we saw birds resting on icebergs, adding to the tranquility of the moment.
As we approached Hjalteyri, the captain noticed a movement in the water – it was Piccolo, a Humpback whale known for its completely white fluke. Piccolo raised its fluke above the surface before diving deep, and we waited in anticipation. Just seven minutes later, it resurfaced much closer to the boat, allowing us to admire its full beauty. After another brief dive, Piccolo reappeared on the other side of the boat, almost as if to greet us.
Whale watching often involves some waiting, but Piccolo made it all worth it. We left the fjord feeling grateful for this magical encounter and eager to see what tomorrow would bring.
