A Chilly but Thrilling Whale Watch Adventure
Today’s whale watching adventure took us out into the brisk -6°C air, with a steady wind coming from the south. As we sailed around the island of Hrisey, the sea was alive with 1.5-meter waves, creating a dance of movement under the gray sky. Despite the cold, the light of the day brought a magical glow to the mountain peaks, casting beautiful hues across the landscape—making it all worth the chill.
We had to venture a little farther than usual to find our whale friends today. After scanning the horizon, we spotted the first signs of life—two humpback whales east of Hrisey. There was also a blow from another humpback in the distance, but we decided to stay close to our two magnificent friends. The conditions were a bit choppy, but we were still able to enjoy some incredible views of these giants. The whales would surface, lifting their heads above the water before taking deep dives back into the depths.
One of these humpbacks stood out with its unique features—a fluke with about 20% white coloration and a beautifully curved dorsal fin. It wasn’t long before one of our captains dubbed this whale “Captain Hok,” and honestly, the name couldn’t have suited it better.
We had the privilege of watching these two humpbacks for quite a while, admiring their grace and power in the wild. Eventually, it was time to head back to the harbor, but the excitement of what we’d seen kept our spirits high.
We can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s adventure holds—who knows what we might discover out there on the water next!
