This morning the sea was calm and beautiful, the sun was coming through the clouds. In the morning temperature was around 4°C, but the temperature rose as the day got further along. Here in Eyjafjörður we are truly starting to see that the winter is gone and summer has just begun. Of course, to the Icelandic people according to the old calendar today is the second day of the summer, and the weather is befitting. Makes us all so much happier to know that the season for this year is only beginning and the summer will have a lot to offer to us, as it has the years before.

As we were sailing, North of Hjalteyri we came across a Minke Whale that was feeding and moving really slowly, giving us some great close-up encounters. It stayed at the surface quite frequently, letting us get a good look of it from different angles. We also saw a pod of Harbor Porpoises nearby and got some nice views of them. They giving their usual quick pops at the surface, making it difficult to say how many of them were in the pod. The fish was also attracting a big group of Northern Gannets which were plunge diving into the sea in their hunt for fish. Hopefully some were successful in their dives.

In the early afternoon we were also lucky in our search for cetaceans. Around the same area was a Minke whale, possibly even the same one as in the morning. It was circling around us, finding us interesting enough to even say hi close by! A big group of Harbour porpoises was also entertaining us with their acrobatic jumping all around the boat. We just couldn’t get enough of the beautiful, tiny whales. They also kept us on our toes when we couldn’t say at all were they would jump up from. Getting these chances of seeing just how many different sizes whales come in is mesmerizing.

For our late afternoon departure the chances weren’t on our side. Despite us looking carefully, around the area were we spotted the whales and even further out, we couldn’t locate them. This comes to show us how the nature can sometimes be tricky. But with the complimentary tickets we provided for the passengers they now have a fresh chance of getting to see the whales here, or even in Reykjavík!
