EYJAFJORD HUMPBACKS
~ on the original Whale Watching tour from Akureyri ~
The Classic Whale Watching is a 2,5-3,5 hr. family-friendly sightseeing tour that takes you into Eyjafjörður where you can experience the unparalleled comfort and stability of our ship whilst viewing the sights of the fjord under the commentary of one of our excellent guides. We will teach you all about the whales and nature in the surrounding area as well as answering any questions!
At the northcentral coast of Iceland the 60 km long and narrow fjord of Eyjafjörður stretches inland. There, nutritious and cold waters from the north are carried with coastal currents inside the deep fiord. The rivers responsible for providing this coastal area with freshwater runoff, loaded with various nutrients, are Svarfaðardalsá river and Hörgá river to the west, the Eyjafjarðará river at the bottom of the fiord and Fnjóská river to the east.
This 1,5-2,5 hr. Express whale watching is a small group tour on custom made 12 seater RIB boats, that can get you closer and faster to the optimal whale watching areas. This means a bigger chance of spotting whales, dolphins and bird life with out disturbing any natural behaviours. We guarantee an intimate and up close experience in Iceland's longest fjord!

Today’s tour had to be discontinued due to unfavorable weather conditions in the fjord. The safety and comfort of our passengers is our highest priority and we sailed back into the harbor safely.
We sailed out and encountered three Humpback Whales swimming together south of Hrísey - one of which was a very familiar Aretha Frankfin.
We spotted Harbor Porpoises in several locations between Svalbarðseyri and Hjalteyri, but unfortunately no other cetaceans, so we offered everyone a complimentary ticket, allowing them to join us again for free in Akureyri or Reykjavík!
We went straight north and found the injured Humpback Whale that was going around as usual, somewhat in circles. Another highlight of the tour was an incredible, and full size rainbow just behind us.
We started by spotting a Minke Whale south of Svalbardseyri. After a few encounters we sailed north and saw 5 Humpback Whales all coming up at different times.
We found ourselves, with engines turned off, in the middle of a feast for 1 Minke Whale, lots of Harbour Porpoises. We headed further out and found 2 Humpback Whales fairly close to each other.
Shortly after leaving out harbour a Minke Whale surfaced right in front of us. We kept going north after some nice encounters with the Minkes and spotted 2 Humpback Whales. One of them rather large, who we know very well as Porcupine.
Only about 5 minutes after leaving the harbour we came across a Minke Whale and a few Harbour Porpoises. Then we kept going north and encountered 7 Humpback Whales. All to ourselves until little diving rib came out. Just when we were about to leave 3 Humpbacks popped up next to the boat, delaying our departure.
Our tour today was cancelled due to bad weather conditions in the fjord. The very strong Southern wind would have made for an uncomfortable ride.
In the area of the Green Buoy there were many Humpback Whales; We counted 8 flukes and there could have possible been more at a distance. On our return we also saw 2 Minke Whales just in front of Akureyri.
Our encounters came in the area between the Green Buoy and Hjalteyri - here spread throughout the area were 11 Humpback Whales. Many whales were familiar flukes however the 2 standout whales being both Max (Porcupine on Happy Whale) and Jubilee.
On todays tours we saw a Minke Whale round the corner out of Akureyri harbour; many White Beaked Dolphins in the area of the Green Buoy; a Humpback also South of the Green Buoy; and 5 Humpback Whales just South of Hjalteyri.
