EXTRA Whale Watching at 9am: It was rather windy and cold when we set of from Akureyri this morning. The snow is already starting to ware off the mountains although they are still mostly white. Soon after we set off the sun came out between the clouds, the mountains looked stunning lit up and it felt warmer although the wind was still blowing. Flocks of long tailed ducks and black guillemots flew past and few northern fulmars showed off their excellent flying techniques when they glided in the air around the boat. We turned around next to the island Hrísey without a sighting. On our way, back we spotted 4-5 harbour porpoises about 200 meters away. Unfortunate this sighting did not last for long, after watching them surface a few times they seemed to have gone for a dive and traveled further away without us noticing. It was disappointing to get back to harbour without a proper sighting, this just reminds us that we are working in nature with wild animals that do not exist for our pleasure. Of course, everyone was offered tickets to come back for another trip, either in Akureyri or Reykjavík!
