A beautiful day to go out whale watching! We had perfect conditions from the very beginning 'til the very end of the tour - flat seas and beautiful winter light above the mountains. We went out with a small delay caused by the amount of ice in the harbour - the ropes have frozen so much we struggled to untie them but eventually succeed. Our first wildlife sighting was actually still in the harbour where we spotted a very relaxed Seal, laying on the ice. We sailed out all the way to Hauganes with no sign of whales until we spotted a blow behind us, closer to Hjalteyri. These animals are deep divers and sometimes it happens that we can pass them on the way while they’re diving. It was a Humpback whale! We had one very nice encounter when the whale surfaced quite close to us but quickly disappeared. We’ve seen him only two times and couldn’t find him again so we headed back to Akureyri. On the way back we had a call about another whale in the harbour but we were not lucky to find him.
