What a day! We sailed out in cold, but calm conditions and were able to spot four Humpback Whales north of Hjalteyri on our morning tour with beautiful and close up encounters. In the afternoon, we again encountered three Humpback Whales in the same area as we did in the morning. After being with these whales for a bit, we saw plenty of blows further north so we knew we had to sail out a little more. Then, we encountered at least six more Humpback Whales close to our boat. Several of them were swimming together at a time, going for dives at the same time. The most that we were able to count at the same time were four Humpback Whales swimming right next to each other, diving one after the other! We also saw one feeding Humpback Whale among them. We saw more blows and flukes in the distance, it was even difficult to decide where to look at times! Just as we turned around to head back towards Akureyri, we saw a breach!!! WOW!
In total we saw at least nine Humpback Whales close up on the afternoon tour and even more from further away, so we saw 10 to 15 in total in the area. This was truly unbelievable and spectacular. What an incredible day!
