This morning, we sailed out in a mostly cloudy fjord with some swell. The wind picked up during the day and the weather conditions got worse, so we unfortunately had to cancel our afternoon tours.
But in the morning, we were still able to sail out and we were extremely happy with the encounters we had! We briefly spotted one Minke Whale north of Grenivík. As we sailed a little further north, we encountered the first Humpback Whales. The area south east of Hrísey turned out to be full of Humpbacks! We saw blows near and far and all around us!
Our most exciting encounter happened, when two Humpback Whales came up directly next to our boat and curiously checked us out! We saw them extremely well and could even make out the flippers and the flukes through the water surface.
In total, there were at least 15 different Humpback Whales in this area of Eyjafjörður.
