Another beautiful winter day in the fjord! Today we sailed out under hazy pink skies and started from a stop by the hot waterfall just outside of Akureyri. Everyone could enjoy the heat from the steamy water and we headed out north. Not even by Svalbardseyri we spotted our first cetacean and it was most likely a Minke whale!! It’s unusual sighting at this time of the year and we only saw it coming up twice, so we were leaving not being entirely sure what we saw but decided to head out north as recent sightings were quite far out. On our way to the northern areas of the fjord we got to enjoy a pod of harbour porpoises that popped up very close to us and stayed up long enough for everyone to see them. North of Hrisey we spotted at least one Humpback whale! the blow and the movement was very clear but the whale went for a dive and we never saw him again. Further out in the fjord the sea conditions have actually got much more difficult - we had a swell coming from the north and the visibility for spotting was not so easy. We turned back and spotted some more porpoises on the way back but no more whales. Not the easiest sailing today. We decided to give out complimentary tickets to everyone to join us again for free within the next 2 years.
