Hello everyone! What a great day today in the fjord!
Despite being cloudy most of the day, the sea conditions were perfect for sailing and so, in the morning tours, first we spotted a Humpback whale south Hrisey, as it was diving for so long we decided to leave it and keep sailing north, and after few minutes, by the east side of Hrisey we saw 3 more humpback whales, 2 of them all the time together and sometimes that close that we even turned off the engines of our rib boat to enjoy them in silence, so it made our day. On the way back to Akureyri, suddenly a few tall fins appeared out of nowhere, White beaked dolphins!
In the afternoon tours, we had to sail again all the way to the east side of Hrisey, but how beautiful is our fjord and how cool is being by the base of Mr Mount Kaldbakur while waiting for the whales to return to the surface. There we saw 2 Humpback whales, the same individuals that we found in the morning and again quite close to each other. On the way back we stopped because another humpback whale just popped out and while we were with it, we saw a tiny dorsal fin right behind the humpy, a Harbour porpoise! it was very curious to see the difference in size of these two species.
Regarding the birdlife: Many puffins, common guillemots, arctic terns, northern fulmars, common loons and much more...Whale watching in Eyjafjörður is also very good for birdlovers!
