We had a bit of wind today, which picked up more and created some waves as well as swell further north in the fjord. Still, it was so good to sail out!
We started boarding this morning while watching polar stratospheric clouds above us. This is a colorful and rare cloud formation, which we were lucky to see during the last few days here in Akureyri!
After sailing out, we saw our first blows just north of Hjalteyri! One Humpback resurfaced right by our boat and was immediately joined by a second Humpback Whale. We watched these two for a few surfacing sequences before there were three more joining them! We continued to watch this group of five Humpbacks and later on, four of them remained swimming together. In the distance both north and south of us, we spotted more blows and estimate the number of Humpback Whales in this area to be at least ten.
Additionally, we even got to see a number of breaches by one Humpback Whale in the distance!
When we returned to the harbor of Akureyri, we spotted a few Harbor Porpoises as well.
