Hello all whale lovers,
Today we had 2 degrees Celsius and snow was flying here and there. The water surface was calm, there were only small waves.
So we sailed north, to find our whale friends. South of Hjalteyri we saw whales blowing behind our boat. We turned the boat and headed south to find our whale friends, humpback whales. One whale blowing, followed by another and then a third..3 humpback whales with unique whale tails. One black, one with a little white on the tips and the third white..Today's whales were an amazing example of how unique tail fins can be in their color and shape.. Also the scratches that are on whale tails help us identify them.. and what are they from? they can be from other humpback whales, when males compete for females, or from fishing lines and robes, from barnacles but also from predators..Sometimes we see scratches from teeth on the tail from predators, which are ..? right ..orcas..or killer whales..the interesting thing is that orcas are not whales but dolphins..so how can these dolphins catch whales bigger than themselves? Killer whales hunt in groups like wolves and are very well organized hunters. In different areas they have developed different hunting techniques that help them get prey that is food for them in that area.. from salmon to seals to other dolphins or whales, even sharks.
The nature around us is amazing when we take a moment to look at it, listen and notice it.
