We sailed out of Akureyri with a light breeze from the south, temperatures between 8 and 11°C, and waves around 1.5 meters south of Hrisey. There was a bit of rain in the air, but it didn’t dampen the excitement of the day. As we ventured out, we spotted some seabirds and harbor porpoises, but the real highlight came when we found two humpback whales. At first, one seemed to prefer its space, but soon they seemed to make peace and began surfacing and diving together.

Humpback whales are typically solitary creatures, though sometimes you’ll see them in small groups of two or more. They may stay together for just a few minutes, or maybe a few days, but eventually, they’ll part ways. The strongest bond in their lives is between a mother and her calf, who stay together for about one and a half years before separating.

It was a beautiful day spent with our whale friends, and we can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring!
