A Calm Sail with a Touch of Mystery: A Day with Picollo

Today’s sailing adventure was nothing like the usual. We set out from the Fishing Harbor with barely a whisper of wind, the temperature hovering around a brisk -6°C. The fjord, usually full of movement, was as still as glass – like a perfect mirror reflecting the world above it. As we sailed, there was an air of anticipation, and we knew something special was waiting for us.

Before we even left Pollurinn Harbor, we got a glimpse of our old friend – Picollo, the humpback whale. From the office window, we could see the telltale spout rising from the water, and that was our sign. We knew which direction we would be heading today.

But what we saw from Picollo today was a little different from yesterday behavior. At first, it began by blowing bubbles.. Then, it did something unusual: it came to the surface, keeping its head above the water for a while, just hanging there, as if in a moment of quiet contemplation. After a short while, it’d dip just the head below the surface again. This wasn’t the usual breezy swim of a whale we’re accustomed to. This felt different – more playful, maybe? It was hard to say for sure, as we don’t speak whale languages, after all. But there was something undeniably light-hearted about its behavior.

The sky was alive with color from the sunrise, casting a soft glow over everything around us. The stillness of the fjord, combined with the delicate hues in the sky, gave me a sense of peace that I could almost feel in my bones. It was a moment of pure connection with nature. I can only hope that our guests felt the same way, taking in the magic of the moment and the beauty of the world around us.

It’s moments like these that remind us just how much there is to discover in nature. Every sail is different, every day brings something new, and every encounter with a creature like Picollo reminds us of how little we truly know about the depths of the ocean and its mysterious inhabitants. But for today, that’s enough – just the quiet beauty of the fjord, a playful humpback, and the peaceful feeling that comes with being in tune with nature.
