A windy and wavy day for us in Eyjafjörður, but with good visibility and sailing out was still worth it!
After starting out the day with seeing polar stratospheric clouds while we boarded Konsúll, we sailed out against a cold northern wind and spotted one Humpback Whale by Hjalteyri!
This Humpback slowly headed southwards and we were able to encounter it as it resurfaced numerous times. By looking at this individual’s back and fluke pattern, it was quickly identified as Piccolo, one of our all-time favorite Humpbacks! It’s always great to encounter and identify our known whales during the tours, especially when we additionally get to have plenty of great and up-close encounters, such as today!
The deep dives were right within our usual average time and Piccolo kept surfacing calmly with long surfacing sequences. We were even able to spot the white pectoral fins underwater a few times, knowing exactly where this Humpback was during the shallow dives between the breaths! Absolutely beautiful encounters today on this winter day in Iceland!
