Today, we had the perfect conditions for a whale-watching adventure. The sky was half-cloudy, with temperatures around 6°C and a south wind. Our office is located right on the harbor in Pollurinn, and before we even set off for the tour, we were fortunate enough to spot a whale blow right from the office window. This early sighting was a sign that we didn’t need to go too far to find a whale—what a great start to the day!

As we got closer to the whale, we immediately recognized it—our friend, Piccolo. This magnificent humpback whale has a distinct body coloration, and the most striking feature was its pure white fluke. It’s always a joy to see Piccolo, and today was no exception. We were lucky enough to witness some incredible details as the whale swam near the surface.

We saw its head break through the water, and with it, the tubercles—those special bumps on the whale’s head that house hair follicles. It was truly a rare sight! Then, the whale turned, showing us the side of its body, revealing its massive pectoral fin. The white coloration on the pectoral fins was absolutely stunning.

Here’s something interesting: humpback whales in this region have white pectoral fins on both the upper and lower parts, unlike Pacific humpbacks, who have black pectoral fins on the upper side. It’s just one of the many unique features that make our humpback whales so special.

As I sit here writing this blog, I’m still gazing out of the office window, and I can see the whale blows in Pollurinn right now. Hopefully, Piccolo will stay around, and we’ll be able to spot it again tomorrow. It’s such a privilege to share this incredible moment with such a magnificent creature. Fingers crossed for another magical encounter!
