Today, we set sail with the temperature around 3°C. The morning began with clear skies, later shifting to a partly cloudy day. A gentle breeze from the south made for a peaceful atmosphere as we ventured out onto the water.
Just like in the previous days, we spotted a familiar sight from the office window – a spout of whale! Naturally, we headed straight for our friend, Picolo the humpback whale.
It was clear that Picolo was hungry today. It surfaced for a quick breath and then disappeared beneath the surface again, likely in search of food. As always, when a whale dives, it’s hard to predict where they’ll come up again since they follow their prey. This means we needed to keep a 360-degree lookout around the boat, scanning the horizon for any signs of movement.
Our guests were thrilled to have the chance to spot Picolo’s white tail fin—one of his signature features. Of course, his distinct white patches on his body also made him easily recognizable from a distance.
After spending some quality time with Picolo, we decided to head north. Not far from the harbor, we spotted a group of harbor porpoises! They were so cute! We paused to watch their triangular dorsal fins break the surface, allowing our guests to compare the differences between porpoises and whales. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about these two incredible species.
As we were heading back to the harbor, something amazing happened. Picolo surfaced right in front of us again! This time, he was feeding close to the water’s surface, and when he turned to his side, we had an up-close view of his impressive long pectoral fins. It was as if he was waving us goodbye.
What an incredible day on the water! We’re already looking forward to what tomorrow has in store.
