We set sail early this morning, greeted by a crisp 7°C temperature and a gentle breeze from the southwest. The sun was shining brightly, and the weather was perfect for a day out on the water. As we sailed towards the northeast of Hrisey, we couldn’t help but feel excited—this was the spot where we had encountered a humpback whale just the days before. We hoped for another amazing experience, and today, the ocean did not disappoint.
The wait for the first sign of the whale was longer than we expected. Patience is key when whale watching, and we knew that all it would take was a glimpse of that unmistakable blow. And then, it happened. The spout shot up into the sky—a sure sign that the humpback was nearby. We also caught a glimpse of the whale's fluke as it began a deep dive, signaling it was preparing for another long descent into the depths.
With each passing minute, we kept our eyes peeled for any sign of the whale resurfacing. It wasn’t long before we saw it again, but this time it was in a different spot, not far from our boat. This time, the whale didn’t show its fluke. Instead, it arched its body, a clear indication that it was preparing for a shallower dive. We could feel the anticipation building as we knew that it wouldn’t be long before the whale would surface once more.
And sure enough, a few moments later, the humpback breached the surface again. We were able to admire its grandeur up close, listening to its deep, rhythmic breaths as it exhaled and inhaled. It was a peaceful, almost magical experience, knowing that we were in the presence of such a magnificent creature.
As we spent some time with our new whale friend, we couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of connection to the ocean and its wonders. But, all too soon, it was time to leave. We gave a final wave to the harbor, now full of memories and magic, before we headed back to shore. Another unforgettable day on the water, and another cherished encounter with the humpback whale.
Until next time!
