Hello and welcome to our daily blog, this time with an unexpected twist.
It feels like the summer is knocking on the doors over here, some might call it crazy warm weather here in Iceland - 12 degrees Celsius, no wind and blue bird over us. Favorable conditions for whale-watching.
Just past the famous Green Buoy we have stumbled upon a good number of Harbour Porpoises, some lunging themselves out of the water as they were catching some delicious fish. A fun appetizer for any whale watching enthusiast. These guys are probably not what you would imagine when one says a ‘‘WHALE’’, but they technically are. We enjoyed about 10 minutes with those little rascals and continued on towards the end of the world. In the north west of Hrísey we met a bigger friend. A Minke Whale, the first one this year! What a great surprise. This far in the fjord a decent swell was coming from the ocean and waves were crushing over the rocky shore fooling even an experienced whale-watcher that another whale is ahead. Time to go back home as we were running a bit late already.
Now the ‘‘fun’’ twist - on the way back we experienced some technical difficulties with our RIB boat and we had to call for aid. Konsúll (our classic tour boat) went to rescue us as the little rubber boat was left idle in the middle of the fjord on a completely calm water. Safe to say, this was not a big drama, we just had to wait and take some sunshine in. One could say an unthinkable adventure happened, we loaded safely everyone onto the bigger boat and dragged the speed boat right behind us back to the harbour. Due to that there was a cascading delay on both of our tours today. We apologize for any incovenience caused by this, yet so far we have not seen anyone leaving without a smile.
