The second day, the second try of the new season! We went out in icy, but calm conditions. Our boat Konsul had to make its way through slush and pancake ice on several occasions throughout the trip, which was interesting and fun to observe while being comfortably wrapped in one of the red overalls. We went to the East of Hrisey and were delighted to find a large pod of 15-20 white-beaked dolphins. Our first cetacean sighting of the season! They were very fun, checking us out and then just continuing their business, likely socializing and feeding later on. Afterward, we spotted a blow not too far away and drove over to investigate. And here we saw it, the first humpback whale of 2022, called ‘Inkblot’. We loved watching its fluke come high up above the sea surface before gracefully vanishing below the waterline. Let’s see what tomorrow will bring.
