Góðan dag! Or Good morning for all of us who are not Icelandic. So we stared our trip today sailing off in our vessel Konsul from Akureyri, in this perfect Icelandic summer day, in to Eyjafjördur. Were only 30 minutes in to the tour we had the first encounter of the day. A minke whale, and not any minke, because thanks to our research catalogue we know it is that in fact it is a whale we have actually seen before during last season’s whale watching tours (2021). After this really nice encounter we kept on sailing smoothly across the shiny, calm waters of the fjord. Pretty quickly we had another encounter, this time with the smallest cetaceans on the fjord, the harbour porpoises! who are commonly know to be very elusive but today we could even see them chilling in the surface of the water very close to the boat and latter on enjoying their cuteness popping in and out of the water very gently. On top of that we also had the opportunity to enjoy the diverse birdlife of the fjord with sightings of Northern Gannets, Northern Fulmars, Longa Tale Ducks, Eider Ducks and some Black-legged Kittiwakes flying around the boat or swimming clos to us. But today it was a special day indeed, because our newest recruits Mada and Gisela started guiding during the encounters with the wildlife, and even though they were extremely nervous about it, they ended up giving a very interesting input about all of the species with Ania (our expert guide) smiling next to them.
