Thrilling Thursday it was! As we sailed out of Akureyri’s harbour and faced strong northern winds and swell, we sailed fast towards the east side of Hrísey, as rumor was that there was a humpback whale in the area. Nothing, literally nothing, could have prepared us for what happened next. At the mercy of the northern swell, we stood by the island scanning the area. Then, the phone rang. “Hello, there is a blue whale here somewhere.”. WHAT?! We cried out of happiness, laughed and hugged each other, as the greatest animal on Earth surfaced time and time again, first at a distance and then incredibly close to us. It was indescribably magical. And, of course, our Eyjafjörður minke whales - Astra and Vestra - were the stars of our morning tour. The gratefulness to be this lucky is real. We live for days like this!
