Breach for the stars
Dear Esteemed Readers of The Blog,
Trust me whales don’t mind the rain. Despite wet and windy conditions we came, saw and conquered. The weather fluctuated throughout the day with patches of rain and sun, however, the misty mountainside with low cloud made for amazing scenery. It was Middle Earth-esque
The first tours of the day were situated around a traveling Humpback Whale, right outside the Akureyri harbour. During the later tours we could no longer find this whale but were greated with many more. The 1300 classic started of with a bang with what appeared to be a mother calf pair of Minkie Whales breaching and almost full porpoising like dolphins around the Grenvik area. The 1500 classic then went up another notch as we were treated with a vigorously tail slapping whale around mid Hrisey. This Humpy was pretty feisty and kept going for around 5 minutes. As we traveled further up the fjord it then got even better as we encountered what I can only describe as a pod of Humpbacks. A group of 7 were al diving and surfacing together showing flukes simultaneously as if it was some kind of family, an unexplainable event. To make things even crazier, there were some White Beaked Dolphins at this party just vibing along as well.
Jesus what a day. Unfortunately my pictures were pretty below par today as i battled the wind and elements trying to take them. The images, however, remain crisp in the mind for myself and everyone who joined us today.
