WOW what a day of incredible encounters!
We started the morning with a trip on our fabulous boat, Konsul heading out into rainy but clear skies and within 20 minutes of sailing and a beautiful view of a rainbow, two male ORCA appeared alongside our vessel!
We had the most incredible view of these two majestic cetceans milling around the boat with much curiosity. We got to spend a large duration watching them swim beside and around our boat and even got some rainbow spouts from the beautiful sunny conditions! We continued our journey out towards Hjalteryi where we were joined by a HUMPBACK WHALE that we have seen frequently in the fjord in recent days, identifiable due to the scarring and wound to the fluke of this individual that despite seems to be doing well and fluking regardless of this injury. This whale spent time circling our boat and even treated our onboard guests by swimming right underneath us! It was the most incredible trip of my time in Akureyri!
In the afternoon we ventured out on Holmasol, once again in search of our cetaceans and we were lucky enough to see both the orca and humpbacks once again in different sections of the fjord. We even saw two breaches from two humpbacks in the distance! We are all very curious to see how the arrival of orca to our fjord influences the behaviours and movements of our humpbacks in days to come. And as if it could possibly be a more eventful trip, on our way back to the harbour we came across not one but multiple COMMON DOLPHIN which despite the somewhat misleading name is actually a species we have only encountered in the fjord this year and has never been recorded in North Icelandic waters as far as we know. The dolphins gave us quite the acrobatic display, with even a young calf making a beautiful appearance out of the water much to the joy of all onboard. This truly was the most magical day and we cannot wait to see what happens next!
