There was a strong South Western wind, plaguing the sea conditions from Akureyri to Hjalteyri with waves and splashes. However, further on from this, the conditions were near perfect as we had mostly shelter from the wind and a glassy sea as a result.

We sailed to the area around Grenivik and saw many Humpback Whales on both tours. The whales were spread widely throughout the area from as south as Rauðavik to Hauganes and North Hjalteyri. We estimated the total number of whales to be in the region to be 15, however, it was difficult to estimate as the whales were moving around a lot. Small groups of up to 4 individuals formed and dispersed regularly. In addition, the sea conditions left us with almost complete silence meaning listening to the distant whales around us was an easy task and we were able to focus on distinguishing between the inhalation and exhalation.

There was also another Humpback spotted south of Hjalteyri but given the weather conditions, we did not stop to observe this individual.
