A true Vikining experience we had today. Our morning tour departed from a very cloudy and windy Akureyri. Lucky for us the lovely fjörð around us was sheltering us enough so we were able to go out during our morning tour. Needless to say, despite getting a bit wet from the rain we enjoyed the company of 4 Humpback whales.
While enjoying this nice Icelandic summer day we first encountered 1 Humpback just East of the green buoy. But shortly after… BAM a 2nd Humpback appeared next to it, rolling on its belly! These two humpbacks were amazing, calmly cruising next to us so everyone was able to enjoy them. After a while, we decided to leave them behind because they were headed North where the wind was stronger. After turning around just SE of the green buoy we encountered a 3rd Humpback whale also very nice to see, surfacing within 50m from us showing its beautiful fluke. After staying with this whale it was time for us to head back. After a couple of minutes sailing, we were lucky enough to spot a small pod of Harbour porpoises popping out of the water as fast as tiny racing cars. And finally, just to make the way back home better… just next to Svalbarðseyri a 4th Humpback whale surfaced, so we of course, stayed with her.
A true Viking whale watching tour today. Where you could see that Whales don’t mind the weather. Amazing bird sightings, jumping Harbour porpoises, and 4 Humpback whales!!
