A peek at Wednesday on the Fjord:
This morning was beautiful glassy conditions, with the sun peeking out. We were surprised to spot our first cetacean only a few minutes out of the Harbour— a Humpback Whale within the first 10 minutes of the tour! We quickly realized that more than one whale had moved south towards Akureyri during the night, because we spent almost the whole tour in the same spot the entire time, enjoying the presence of 4 Humpbacks who were very active and frequently diving. We were also lucky to see one whale pec-slapping over and over.
The wind picked up in the afternoon and so did the whale activity! We started by seeing lots of flukes and diving from 4 Humpbacks. We did have to travel a little further north as the whales had moved from the morning. Then unexpectedly… a massive breach right in front of us!! This energetic display was followed by a close encounter with a pair of whales swimming side by side, as well as a long period of lunge feeding! Such a beautiful display from so many whales today.
Thanks for popping by the blog today, (the first photo is the whale waving to you).
