Greetings whale watchers,
Today we had summer weather back in Akureyri! The sun was out and we had a slight north wind. In the morning our tours took us to Svalbardseyri where we hung out with a few Humpback Whales. A wonderful start to the day!
Our afternoon tours were action-packed when our express tours found themselves in the middle of a group of 5 Humpback Whales near Svalbardseyri. These whales were very focused on feeding and lucky for us, they remained near the surface and were frequently surfacing. We were able to have some very beautiful, very close encounters with this group. We went a little further north to see two other Humpbacks that did a couple nice dives for us. On the way back south we were fortunate to have a Minke Whale surprise us by surfacing twice right behind us— the blow startled us! Our last encounter was with a very curious whale who stayed very close and passed underneath us multiple times as we floated with our engines off. This was a magical end to the day… Goosebumps!
