Busy morning here in Ejyafjordur,
The weather today was amazing and sunny and there was a little bit of wind from the north. We had many beautiful Humpback Whale sightings on our tours this morning, including some very close encounters where we were able to speak to our guests about fluke identification using many real-life examples. We were also lucky to have a pair of Humpbacks coming very close to us while swimming side by side and diving almost in unison. And all of this action was near Svalbardseyri, so we didn’t have to travel very far from the harbour. Lastly, we did have a Minke Whale sighting and some cute Harbour Porpoises to really round out our tours.
Quite lots of the encounters we’ve had with Humpbacks, were as close at it can get. Twice, literally popping up right in front of the boat blowing peoples hair up in the air. A proper wake up shower from underneath that is.
The afternoon was filled with lots of whales in the same area again. Actually more than in the morning. These guys must have called their buddies over to come and feed. The sun still baking our heads of course, but the wind did pick up a little in the afternoon as it always does on warm sunny days. Still, we could see the whole whale under the surface of the water and very clearly their white pectoral fins shimmering through the water. We were actually able to witness the whales moving their flippers under water. We did also encounter a Minke, not sure if that was the same as the one in the morning since these guys are not as easily identifiable as Humpbacks.
Also as you can see, our guides were happy too.
In the evening, the cherry on the cake, we got a Humpback whale breaching a dozen times in a row!
