Glassy start in the day with little wind. It is definitely very easy on us when it comes to spotting marine mammals in conditions like this.
This morning we really did not have to go far to find something extraordinary. I would not hesitate to even use a word crazy! We have been recently very lucky with spotting whales, but they were definitely not right in the harbour. What happened right there started around the Green Buoy, right there we spotted two Humpback Whales travelling side by side surrounded by birds. They kept changing the direction of where they swam and then it happened. As a crew some of us have never seen this, we saw boiling water surface with little herring running for their lives away from the monstrous hungry mouths of those massive Humpback Whales, it kept happening many times and I have to say that every time they came up like this, my heart skipped a beat out of awe. This behaviour is even more rare than the whales breaching. Which believe it or not happened right after this, although we did not manage to capture it. The whales kept swimming towards Akureyri and they were feeding in really shallow waters, information was that at some point the water where they were feeding was only 6 meters deep. The last position was between Gásir and Krossanessborgir.
This is so exciting not only because it is so rare to see two baleen whales together, but feeding like this is just insane plus they were heading closer and closer to us so we will likely have a lot of time to spend with them like we did in the morning.
