The weather conditions were very calm today, hardly any wind and temperatures just above freezing.
Today, we spotted our well-known Humpback Whale Piccolo inside Akureyri’s harbor area, Pollurinn!
We spent some time observing the behavior and surface sequences of this Humpback Whale. At first, it moved around quite a bit, quickly surfacing once or twice before going for a deeper dive with an arched back, but without lifting its fluke. Suddenly, the behavior changed and we could see lunge feeding close to us! It was so close, we even saw small fish jumping above the water surface as the Humpback repeatedly came up with an open mouth, surface feeding!
This was only excelled when the Humpback came up spectacularly close to us towards the end of our encounter. It surfaced right by our side, surprising everyone on board! Our engines were turned off as we were waiting for the next time the whale would surface. The Humpback decided to have another close look at Konsúll when it came up equally close on the other side of the boat before going for a deep dive!
What an amazing day with excellent encounters just outside of Akureyri!
