A Magical Day on the Water: Whales, Dolphins, and Stunning Views

Today, we set sail under a crisp -2°C sky. The water was calm, and as we sailed north, the snow-covered mountains provided a stunning backdrop. A gentle breeze added to the peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect day on the water.

To find some movement, we sailed a bit further than usual, and the guests were in for a treat. They had the chance to spot the Coast Guard and a submarine near Hrísey.

And sure enough, after the Coast Guard had sailed more than two miles away from us, we caught sight of the first spouts—two humpback whales! The whales were approaching us and came very close to the boat. One of them was our friend Piccolo, and the other was a very playful whale. It rolled onto its side and got so close to our boat that we had an amazing, up-close view. It felt like we were witnessing a performance by these majestic creatures, their graceful movements captivating everyone aboard.

But the excitement didn’t end there. More dorsal fins popped up from the water, one after another. Before we knew it, a small group of white-beaked dolphins appeared beside us. They seemed to be following the two humpback whales, almost as though they were escorting them through the water. It’s always fascinating to see dolphins and whales together. While we’re not entirely sure if the whales enjoy the company or if the dolphins might be a bit of an annoyance, there’s something quite magical about their interaction. In Hawaii, one dolphin sliding atop the head of humpback whale, almost as if both animals are benefiting from the exchange—dolphin having fun while the whale enjoy a little massage!

Nature always has a way of surprising us, and each time we venture out on the water, we’re reminded of how truly unique and special these moments are. It’s an incredible privilege to witness the beauty of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it.
