We set sail this morning in -7°C weather, and the fjord was absolutely calm, with the sun shining brightly overhead. It was a beautiful and peaceful day on the water, with the crisp air adding to the sense of adventure. The cool breeze didn’t deter anyone, and everyone was able to enjoy the stunning beauty of the fjord. As we sailed out, we spotted birds resting on the icebergs, almost as if they were using them as little floating islands to travel from place to place. It was so serene.
As we made our way east of Hrísey, we were lucky enough to witness the majestic spouts of three humpback whales. One of them was our old friend, Piccolo. Yesterday, Piccoolo was with one companion, but today it had two other humpbacks with it. It’s amazing how these whales can easily find friends in the vast ocean, but as quickly as they come together, they often part ways after a few hours or days. Humpback whales are generally solitary creatures, so it’s not too common to see them in groups. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t social creatures. As we saw with Picollo, even the most solitary of whales sometimes crave companionship.
We also had an unforgettable close encounter when one of the whales decided to pass right in front of our boat. We had turned off the engine when it swam by, lifting its majestic tail into the air in a graceful display. It was incredible! The whales were popping up around us frequently, giving all our guests the chance to witness the beauty and uniqueness of the moment.
I’m so excited to see what tomorrow will bring. Every trip is different, and each moment on the water holds something special. Stay tuned for more!
