The sun was shining as we set out, a perfect day to explore the beautiful fjord. From the very first sighting, nature welcomed us. A curious Bearded Seal popped its head above the water, eyeing me with a look that seemed to ask, "What are you saying?" It lingered for a while, floating just a short distance from the floating pier that I could almost touch it. Then, just as quickly as it had appeared, it disappeared beneath the surface. But we were lucky enough to have had a few moments with this curious creature, and so did our guests.
As we continued our journey northward, near Svalbardseyri, the captain spotted some movement in the water. Small dorsal fins broke the surface, and we realized they belonged to a group of harbor porpoises. They're known to be quite shy, and despite our best efforts to slow down and check around the boat, they were quickly gone, slipping out of sight.
Undeterred, we pressed on, navigating farther north into the wild. The waves began to rise, reaching up to two meters, and soon we were surrounded by snow showers and a beautiful rainbow. The landscape was covered in a soft white blanket, and the visibility in the distance became a bit tricky. Still, we remained hopeful, searching for signs of the magnificent cetaceans that call these waters home.
Unfortunately, our search wasn't successful today. It felt as though the whales were playing a game of "hide and seek," and we hadn't quite figured out the rules. But even without a sighting, the experience was still remarkable—nature has its own way of keeping us on our toes.
As we turned back and headed south, the weather started to calm, and the sun made a welcome return. The ride was beautiful, with stunning views of the mountains and the fjord. We couldn’t help but feel grateful for the adventure and the moments we had, even if the humpback whales were a bit elusive today.
Tomorrow is another day, and we’ll be ready to try again, hoping for a closer encounter with those magnificent creatures.
